What I Love (and Don't Love) about America

I am so, so thankful to have been born in the United States in the 20th Century.

I am so, so thankful to be alive at a time when the Holy Spirit is so present throughout the world - revealing Himself to be moving hearts and changing minds every day.

I am so, so thankful to have been born in a country that not only allows women to start and own businesses, but encourages it's citizens to go after new ideas, fill needs, and solve problems.

I am so, so thankful to be not just a business owner, but a mom in a time when more conversations than ever are being had about how to do both well and more and more businesses and creators are stepping up to solve the struggles I face every day.

This is almost completely unique throughout the history of the world, and I'm so, so thankful.

I love all of these things about being a Christian, living in America, working and building a family right now.

But there are also (of course) things I don't love.

And one of the biggest things I don't love about being an American women (and business owner) right now is how much temptation there is to equate our worth with our work.

In a world where we can do so much, there's so much pressure. There's an ever present weight of feeling like we are failing (or are failures ourselves) when not a lot is getting done.

Some of the greatest strengths of this country - openness to the entrepreneurial spirit and the promise of the American dream - get twisted from freedom into a kind of slavery where we are beholden to the things we accomplish.

But it doesn't have to be that way.

As Christians, we live in the both/and. We don't have to reject the great freedom given to us in America to work and create as we see fit in order to reject the lie that we are what we produce. We can embrace the opportunities of this time and this country while still being clear: even if we fail - even when we fail - our worth remains.

We are not made worthy by our work or our contribution. We are made worthy by the One that made us.
