What the Bible Says about The Holy Spirit

Whenever we think of God our inclination is to focus mostly on the two persons of the trinity. We consider God the Father and recognise His Fatherly care, love and discipline towards us. We think of His great love toward us through giving us His Son Jesus to bear the burden of our sins.

When we think of Jesus, we easily make the connection of His undeserving sacrifice for us on the cross and eternal life that He has bought for us by His blood. We think of how He reconciled us back to the Father and allowed us to enter into a relationship with Him.

We make those connections with God the Father and God the Son but can find ourselves feeling hesitant about the third person of the Trinity, the Holy Spirit. Perhaps His name makes us uneasy, we may wrongfully think of Him as a force, or an ‘it’ but He is a person. The Holy Spirit is personable and knowable because He is the Spirit of God that dwells within us.

Just like the Father and the Son have their roles in redemption history, so the Holy Spirit plays a vital role in the life of Christians. When Jesus was ready to ascend to the Father, He promised to give us the Spirit who would be with us. The next few scriptures teach us not only of His role but of His nature and importance in our lives.

Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. - 2 Corinthians 3:17

But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. - John 14:26

Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?-1 Corinthians 3:16

He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit. - Titus 3:5

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope. - Romans 15:13

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. - Romans 8:26

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. - Galatians 5:22-23

Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit desires. - Romans 8:5

The Christian life cannot be lived apart from the Holy Spirit. When we attempt to live without the Spirit, we cannot please the Lord. The Lord is the Spirit and through Him, we can grasp scripture, serve in our giftings, fight against sin, pray sincerely and live out God’s Word as He calls us to do.

Our battle will always be between the world and the kingdom of God, between the flesh and the Spirit. When our minds are on the things of the flesh our desires will be for the world and its lusts. When our minds are fixed on the Spirit, on the Word, and the Kingdom of God, we will begin to live more and more in step with the Spirit and what He desires.
