I have a nasty little habit of praying really diligently at the beginning of things but then once I feel like I have even a whisper from the Lord about what I should do I grab the ball, run off in that general direction and don’t really look back or check in.
It’s … not great.
It’s a good thing that I pray in the beginning of things but I’m not very good at letting the Lord redirect me or even speak to me in the process. And so that’s why I am embarking on my own No Plan November.
This might not be for everyone, but if you’re like me and you tend to check in in the beginning and then go off on your own for a while once you feel like you know “the plan“ or if you struggle with control and trust in God, this is a worthwhile exercise.
Here’s what I’m thinking: for the next 30 days of November I am not going to actively plan. I will continue to do the “planning“ activities that keep our life on track – making my kids lunches the night before, setting out my clothes the night before so I don’t wake up the baby currently sleeping in my closet (long story), and planning our meals for the week so that it’s not 5:50 PM when I start thinking about dinner for the day.
But if I have a free weekend? I’m not going to plan anything.
Looking into 2023 with my business? Not going to plan anything.
Trying to find a date night with my husband this month? Not going to plan anything.
If it’s not a normal rhythm of life or business thing this month I’m not going to do it – that is unless I am prompted by the Spirit to specifically do it.
So said another way - it’s not that I’m not going to do anything, I’m just not going to plan anything. I’m going to let God set the agenda.
Think of it as a control fast. For the month of November I’m going to let the Lord direct my attention and make my decisions. And I am entering into this with the full faith that this will be one of the most surprising months of my life.
The point of this month is to make ample space for the Holy Spirit to interrupt, redirect, and move me. I will say yes to the opportunities put in front of me that are in keeping with what I know about God - things like opportunities to share the gospel with my waitress at a restaurant or to pray over someone who needs healing after church, or even an opportunity to have time alone with my husband which is something I know God invites me to say yes to because of my vocation as a wife.
I will say yes to time with my children, opportunities that arise in keeping with the spiritual gifts that God has given me, and I will not put limitations on what I will let the Holy Spirit do this month. I will take risks, I will be obedient, and I will do whatever He tells me, in the spirit of the servants instructed by Mary at the wedding feast at Cana.
Sound a little bit radical? It is. I’ve done this on a smaller scale in my life and the results have been insane so I’m borderline giddy at what the Lord is going to do this month.
Want to join me? I would love to do this with friends. But this isn’t one of those spineless “let’s build some engagement” things – I’m doing this for real whether anyone joins me or not.
I’m saying yes to what the Lord is inviting me personally into right now and that might not be for you. But, it could be! If you are hungry to live with this kind of radical trust in God’s presence and provision, pray about joining me. I’d love to hear about all the ways that God surprises us all this month.
If this is pulling at your heartstrings but you have no idea how you would even do this - I’ve got you. This packet will give you everything you need - the “rules” I’m following, FAQs, troubleshooting, book recommendations, journaling prompts and pages, and additional resources.
Regardless, buckle up. I know I’m going to have some great stories for you from this month and I’m sure you’ll have some good ones for me too.
