If you struggle with anxiety to any degree, one of the best ways to describe what it does to you is like covering your eyes with a lightly shaded veil. You see what is in front of you, but it is a slightly twisted image of it.
The mountain seems too high to climb, the day seems like it has no end and the situation seems like it will never improve. Anxiety heightens our inability to see past what is in front of us at the moment.
Anxiety multiplies these thoughts. These anxious thoughts are unpleasant, to say the least. When there is nothing for you to look to, the only other option is to stare at your anxieties. And when that is all that you can see, any hope out of it seems bleak. Doesn't it?
We all have different anxiety triggers. Often when we experience anxiety it stems from responsibilities, conflict with others, the stress of school or work, or even socializing with others.
If we're honest, there are a million voices and gurus that will readily give you their tips and tricks for dealing with the anxieties of life. Practical tips can be very helpful but taking care of our souls is an important part of working through our anxieties. There's only One who knows and made the heart of man, that's God. I hope these scriptures will shed a light on your worries and flood your heart with His peace that surpasses all understanding.
When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought joy to my soul. - Psalm 94:19
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid. - John 14:27
And which of you by being anxious can add a single hour to his span of life? If then you are not able to do as small a thing as that, why are you anxious about the rest? - Luke 12:25-26
Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. - Matthew 6:34
Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.- Philippians 4:6
Anxiety in the heart of man causes depression but a good word makes it glad. - Proverbs 12:25
Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. - Matthew 11:28-30
Casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you. - 1 Peter 5:7
Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? - Matthew 6:25
When the righteous cry for help, the LORD hears and delivers them out of all their troubles. -Psalm 34:17
But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength; they will fly up on wings like eagles; they will run and not be tired; they will walk and not be weary. - Isaiah 40:31
Now may the Lord of peace himself give you peace at all times and in every way. The Lord be with all of you. - 2 Thessalonians 3:16
Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken. -Psalm 55:22
When you find yourself in a situation that stirs great anxiety within you, it can rob you from experiencing joy. However, when you turn to the Lord, He showers His comforts on you. The comfort of the Spirit is found in God’s promises to us. His promise to be with us, His unwavering love, and His finished work on the cross.
The comfort that Jesus gives us is not like the world’s comfort. It is one that completely enfolds us and brings our weary hearts to rest in His trustworthy hands. So, worrying about tomorrow, or next week strips us of today. When we look to the Lord we can see each new day as a gift.
